Creators, Advancers, Refiners, and Executors Sometimes Flexers. No one is Locked into any Role CARE

Preferred Team Member Roles

Team role focuses on the possibilities, generate new ideas and fresh concepts. Prefer a world of opportunities, look for activities that are unstructured or abstract and they thrive on innovating a unique solution.

Team Role - Creator

Team members that are spontaneous, enthusiastic, offers fresh perspectives, offers bold ideas, able to see the big picture Optimistic and willing to solve problems

Creator characteristics

Team members that focus on the interaction. They communicate new ideas and carry them forward. They recognize ideas and new directions in the early stages and develop ways to promote them. Their actions are directed toward achieving objectives by the most direct and efficient means.

Team Role- Advancers

Team members that are positive with self-confident attitudes, insightful planners and use past experience to guide success, well developed promoters, not easily discouraged.

Characteristics of Advancers

Team role that focuses on the analysis. They challenge all concepts. They utilize a methodical process to analyze things in an orderly manner to detect possible flaws and identify potential problems under discussion. They make sure ideas are sound before moving them to the next level.

Team Role- Refiner

Team members that are able to identify and clarify possible problems, detail oriented, analytical, able to offer new ideas and alternatives, practical soundboardsto validate ideas.

Characteristics of Refiners

Team members and focus on the realization. They follow up on team objectives and implement ideas and solutions. They deliver concrete results and seek successful implementations. They are focused on ensuring the implementation process proceeds in an orderly manner, based on a well-thought-out plan.

Team Role- Executors

This team member can focus on everything. This member is a combination of all four other roles. They are very good at monitoring contributions of all team members and when necessary, are able to step in to fill in gaps in order to keep things moving in the right direction.

Team Role- Flexers

These members are able to connect to and negotiate with all types of people, tolerant and understanding, able to identify what is missing in the process, willing to offer suggestions to improve the process.

Characteristics of Flexers

Without Creators, no new concepts.


Without Advancers, ideas stall or don’t come to light


Without Refiners, new directions are not thought through; details are overlooked


Without Executors, there is no implementation


Without Flexer, there may be gaps in the team.

Without you Team dynamics

It is what a team’s success rests on. It is how well people get along that determines the teams effectiveness and its ability to progress through team development. It’s an ongoing process. It’s the ongoing process involving interaction of individuals within a team to move toward or away from achieving the design objective.

Team Dynamics

Panic - Elation - Panic: occurs whenever we are in situations that require us to come up with new ideas such as team meetings, problem-solving sessions.

The P.E.P. Cycle

Ideas often bounce back and forth between the Creators, Advancers, and Refiners. Requires continuous leadership to get the idea going on to the next steps.

The “Z” Process

It includes evaluating and using the knowledge, skills, experience, assessment and evaluation results, and resources you have in the most efficient ways possible to effectively complete the mission. Usually obtained after the team reaches the goal through hot washes, after action report, or lessons learned

Individual and Team Level

Ways to measure team-related performance

The Airmans participation in team meetings, volunteers for team projects, communicates with members in a constructive non-threatening manner, if all the members find the Airman is pleasant to work with and fosters cooperation.

Individual Level: An individual’s contribution to the Team- Individual Behavior

Error rates, the timeliness of the product, the number of suggestions are made, the accuracy of the data provided.

Individual Level: An individual’s contribution to the Team- Individual Results

How well the team works together as a group, the effectiveness of the team meetings, the ability of a team to reach consensus, the teams problem-solving techniques

Team Level: Measuring Team’s performance: The Team Process

The number of cases completed, mission completion, the use, acceptance, and understandability of the teams final reports.

Team Level: Measuring Team’s performance: The Team’s Results

Maintain good communications, build positive working relationships, acknowledge good work, be real, be decisive, delegate jobs to the right people, manage conflict, set a good example,

Ways to Enhance Team Performance

Use verbal praise, provide written praise, hold a celebration party or event, I have an offsite.
