Nursing considerations: monitor renal function and hearing; poor absorption orally; administer IV (peak 5 mins, duration 12-24 hrs); avoid extravasation during therapy (it may cause necrosis); give antihistamine if "red man syndrome" (decreased BP, flushing of face and neck); contact clinican if signs of superinfection (sore throat, fever, fatigue)
