The Carolina’s proprietors made lots of money and had total control over the government and colonist

The colonist were very unhappy and wanted out of the proprietors rule. So in 1719, many southern Carolinas signed a petition to have themselves remover from the proprietor’s rule, and requested that they be a royal colony. King of England granted their request, and made Southern Carolina a royal colony.

Carolina was now protected and governed under English rule but allowed the colonist to govern themselves.

England finally had true rights to the land in 1729 when they full purchase the land from the proprietors.

North Carolina had very thin and sandy soil, so when the settler first came in 1665, they had a hard time farming

It was only until the farmers realized that Tobacco could be grown on thin soil, that farming became successful, and their economy thrived. They needed this, because up until this time, they did not have a cash crop to make money.

North Carolina biggest problem was that ships could not access their coast because of sand bars, and shallow water. This had a tremendous affect on the economy, because it made it very difficult for north Carolina to export their most profitable product

Europe’s demand for tobacco grew and although they had the product, it was very difficult to trade

The tobacco farmers traveled by land to the coast of Virginia to export their tobacco. To raise more money, North Carolina traded tobacco to the other American colonies, but England soon put a stop to this with the Navigation Act of 1660, which limited the settler to trade only with England.

Then in 1673 England developed the plantation duty act, which allowed settlers to trade with other colonies as long as they paid a tax.

1680 settler began growing rice which soon became southern Carolinas leading cash crop.

By the 1730 rice was South Carolinas biggest and most successful product. It was a cash crop bringing tremendous profits.

South Carolina became very wealthy. Later in 1739, Indigo crop was invented, which brought additional profits to South Carolina. Indigo crop produced a blue dye that was high in demand. It therefore became South Carolina seoncd leading crop.
