Was the first deaconess identified in the Bible. Paul identified her as providing nursing care. The Deaconnesses were the first public health nursing organization. It's the earliest record of Christian nursing.
Phoebe
Oraganized in the 1970's. One nurse does most of the work unless they are off duty. It assigns the total care of one nurse to one patient. Plans the care and is responsible for the managment of the patient. The associate nurses report to the nurse and the nurse makes changes to the care plan. The goal is for this nurse to collaberate with the patient, the pt's. family and other mambers of the health care team. Not usuall used for roles such as administration.
Primary Care Nursing
Is considered America's first trained nurse. She developed new nursing programs and improved on existing ones. She was very active in founding national nursing organizations and the first president of ASSTSN.
Melinda Ann (Linda) Richards
made radical changes to nursing education. She cut down the student's workday to 10 hours and eliminated the free private duty services.
Isabel Hampton Robb
Leader/activist in development of nursing education. Professor and founder of Johns Hopkins school of nursing.
Developed "the science of unitary man" model. The person is a unified field which is continually interacting and exchanging matter and energy with the environment. She concluded that well being is reflected in patterns and organization of this energy field. She saw the nursing role as one to act to promote and facilitate symphonic interaction between man and environment.
Martha Rogers 1970
Humanistic,holistic. The holistic individual moves through time and space as part of an expanding universe with potential states of maximum well-being. Nurses act to promote symphonic interaction between man and environment by repatterning the human and environmental fields.
An act by the state legislature what becomes law. Used to prescribe conduct, define crimes, create government bodies, appropriate public monies and in general to promote public welfare. At the local level, government adopts ordinances. At the state or federal level they are called regulations.
Statute
A rule or formal regulation that appears in writing. A violation of a statute is legally punishable. Includes constitutional law and enacted law. All laws are in hierarchy of authority with constitutional law having the greatest authority and enacted law the next. Regulatory law is below statutory law. The nurse practice act is a statutory law.

This might include physical harm, psychological harm, harm to livelihood, or some other less tangible value such as harm to reputation.The most common unintentional tort is negligence. Some authorities emphasize that negligence includes the responsibility to foresee possible results of a situation and act appropriately. Malpractice is professional negligence.

Fraud
Ex: trying to cover up a medication error or stating to an employer you're a nurse practitioner when you really aren't. Courts tend to be more harsh on fraud than a simple malpractice case because fraud represents a deliberate attempt to mislead others.

Hariet Tubman
1820-1913. Also an abolitionist and "conductor of the underground railroad" this black nurse was commended for caring for the sick and wounded without regard to color.
She developed the theory of caring. This is based on three assumptions: 1. caring is a universal social behavior 2> care for self is neccessary before care for others 3. care and love are the cornerstones of humanness. The nurses role is to emphasize the humanistic dimension of nursing that can only be practiced interpersonally.
