What are two main forms of IBD?
Chrohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
IBD is most prevalent in...
North Americans, Europeans and United Kingdom
IBD is most prevalent in what religeous background?
Jewish
Why does IBD develope?
When genetically susceptible individuals have a sustained immune reaction that causes inflammation in response to a bacterial or viral antigen.
Non smoking people with IBD will get..
Ulcerative Colitis
Smokers with IBD will get...
Crohn's Disease
This diseasetargets the bowel's mucosa and creates a difuse continuous process of inflammation characterized by edema and shallow ulcerations and superficial bleeding.
Ulcerative Colitis
Affects the distal ileum, right colon mostly but can occur anywhere in the intestinal tract. Occurs in segments and is not continuous.
Chrohn's Disease
Primarily affects the distal colorectal area, if the disease moderately progresses out of the colorectal area it will travel from the colon to the splenic flexure. inflammation is mostly mucosal. In severe cases the inflammation and ulceration can travel as far as the hepatic flexure or ileocal junction.
Ulcerative Colitis
This disease process produces a cobblestone effect of granulomas that thicken the walls of the intestine and narrow the lumen.
Chrohn's Disease
A lesser form of this that is confined to the rectum is called ulcerative proctitis. Complications of this include loss of absorption and elasticity, mucosa is replaced by scar tissue, development of pseudopolyps that may become malignant, toxic megacolon, hemorrhoids and bleeding.
Ulcerative Colitis
Complications include fistulas, perianal disease, strictures, abscesses, perforation, anemia, malabsorption of fat and fat soluble vitamins.
Chrohn's Disease
Affects the left colon and rectum, classic signs and sx. are bloody mucous diarrhea and abdominal pain. The diarrhea is associated with left sided pain that is relieved with the emptying of the bowel. The scarring associated with the disease can decrease the sensation of the urge to defacate and lead to leakage of stool.
Ulcerative Colitis
Fat in the stool due to malabsorption notedd in Chrohn's Disease.
Steatorrhea
Localized pain in the RLQ and a tender mass can be felt in the area. During an acute attack, it may mimic appendicitis. Loss of vitamins ADEK due to malabsortion. Associated with diarrhea after an emotional upset.
