Describe the Health Belief Model
The Health Belief Model is a behavior change and psychological model developed by Rosenstock in 1966 for studying and promoting the uptake of health services. Originally designed to predict behavioral response to the treatment received by acutely or chronically ill patients. However, more recently has been used to predict more general crackpot health behaviors.
What is the prediction of the Health Belief Model?
The prediction of the Health Belief Model is the likelihood of an individual concerned to undertake the recommended health action
List the 4 perceptions of the Health Belief Model developed by researchers in the US in the 1950s
1 - Perceived susceptibility (risk of condition)
2 - Perceived severity (how bad it is)
3 - Perceived barriers (influences that encourage or discourage promoted behavior)
4 - Perceived benefits
List the 7 factors added later to connect the various types of perceptions with the predicted health behavior
1 - Demographic variables (age, gender)
2 - Socio-psychological variables (status, personality, coping strategies)
3 - Perceived efficacy (can they adopt the desired behavior?)
4 - Cues to action (external influences promoting the desired behavior)
5 - Health motivation
6 - Perceived control
7 - Perceived threat
What is Therapeutic Communication?
A process in which the nurse consciously influences a client or helps the client to a better understanding through verbal or nonverbal communication
What is the nursing process?
The nursing process is a systematic problem-solving process directed towards the provision of nursing care for patients.
What are the 5 components that make up the clinical decision making model?
1 - Assessment
2 - Analysis
3 - Planning
4 - Implementation
5 – Evaluation
What is a patient assessment?
The gathering and organization of data in relation to the patient's health status
What steps are taken during the analysis part of the nursing process?
Patient's data is synthesized in order to identify the patient's actual or potential health problems (diagnosis)
During what phase of the nursing process does the nurse form a diagnosis?
Analysis
During what phase of the nursing process are expected outcomes established?
Planning
During what phase of the nursing process will the nurse take a patient's health status into consideration? (age, sex, individual preferences, physical condition, cultural considerations, socioeconomic and environmental factors)
Planning
During what phase of the nursing process does Maslow's hierarchy of needs apply?
Analysis
In what phase of the nursing process will the nurse collaborate with other health care providers on behalf of the patient?
Analysis
During what phase of the nursing process will the nurse assign other health care duties to other members of the health care team?
Planning
During what phase of the nursing process will the nurse establish the patient's expected outcome?
Planning
During what phase of the nursing process is the patient's plan of care revised based on patient reassessment?
Planning
During what phase of the nursing process will the nurse seek the patient's response to care provided by other members of the health care team?
Evaluation
During what phase of the nursing process will the nurse promote continuity of care (referrals, community resources)
Implementation
During what phase of the nursing process will the nurse reassess the patient's response to nursing care?
Evaluation
During what phase of the nursing process will the nursing actions and interventions designed to move the patient toward the expected outcome be initiated and completed?
Implementation
