Natural Numbers or N

The set of numbers, 1, 2, 3, 4,... (and so on), that we see and use everyday. The Natural Numbers are often referred to as the Counting Numbers and the Positive Integers.

Whole Numbers or W

The Natural Numbers plus the zero.

Integers or Z

Integers are like Whole Numbers, but they also include negative numbers... but still no fractions allowed.

So Integers can be negative numbers, positive numbers, or zero.

Rational Numbers or Q

A Rational Numbers is a number that can be written as a ratio, that means it can be written as a fraction, in which both the Numerator (the number on top) and the Denominator (the number on the bottom) are Whole Numbers.

Irrational Numbers or J

The Irrational Numbers are those that cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers. Examples are Square roots (√) and special numbers like Euler's Number or e, and Pi (π).

π = 3.14159

e = 2.71828

Real Numbers or R

Real Numbers are numbers that can be found on the number line. This includes positive and negative integers, rational numbers and irrational numbers.

Imaginary Numbers or i

An Imaginary Numbers is a number that, when squared, has a negative result. Essentially, an imaginary number is the square root of a negative number and does not have a tangible value. While it is not a real number — that is, it cannot be qualified on the number line.

i = √-1

Complex Numbers or C

A Complex Number is combination of a Real Number and an Imaginary Number.
