1860 - 1890

1867 Medicine Lodge Treaty - established land for Kiowa and Commanche. 4/5 NA males had to agree for treaty to change.


1868 Fort Laramie Treaty - established 'Great Sioux Reservation', 3/4 of the male population had to agree.


Homestead Act 1862 - gave free land to farmers in return for them farming for five years.


Plains Wars - Sand Creek Massacre 186, Cheyenne Uprising 1963, Battle of Little Bighorn 1976, Battle of Wounded Knee 1890.


Reservation Policy

1890 - 1930

Dawes Act 1887 - Allocated lands to NA to encourage self-sufficiency. Granted citizenship but 78 million acres lost, broke down reservations and only benefited NA with good land.


Lone Wolf vs Hitchcock - high court's seal of approval upon forced allotment of Indian Lands.


Burke Act 1906 - allowed govt. to sell NA land to NA with white heritage.


WW1 - Choctaw Code Talkers and Indian Soldier Act


Indian Citizenship Act 1924

1933 - 1945

Meriam Report 1928 - Condemned the allotment policy and criticized the dreadful conditions on reservations.


Indian Reorganization Act - Indians allowed more influence over administration on reservations, overthrew 1883 law that banned ceremonial dances, curtained sale of land to individuals, 5 million acres restored.

1950 - 1961

Termination - NA no longer wards of the state, Indian Relocation Act and Vocational Training Act 1956, Approx 13,000 out of 400,000 NA affected, as many as 750,000 migrated to cities in 1950's - 60's.


Urbanization - Unemployment 42% in 1968, low life expectancy - 44 against national average of 64, spiritually bereft city life, shanty towns.

1960s

1960s fish-ins - 1974 decision for 50% of fish in Western Washington went to tribes.


Kennedy and Johnson - Kennedy increases funding for NA education and adult vocational funding, National Council on Indian Opportunity and 1964/68


Nixon - Ended Termination, returned Indian lands, positive discrimination for NA.
