What does NP stand for? |
Nasopharyngeal |
Describe the indications for use of the NP airway. |
Airway protection is needed, and you are unable to insert an oral airway. |
What will you want to do first before insertion? |
Determine that another less invasive technique may not maintain a patent airway. |
After you have determined that a less invasive technique may not maintain a patent airway, what will you want to do next? |
Examine the nose to ensure it is patent & will accept an NPA. Ensuring no maxillofacial trauma. |
After you have examined the nose for patency and ensured there is no maxillofacial trauma, what will you want to do next. |
Select the appropriate size by correctly measuring from nostril to tip of ear (natural curve of airway) |
After you have selected the most appropriate size NP airway, what will you want to do next? |
Establish the patent airway manually - modified jaw thrust as applicable. |
After you have established a patent airway manually, what will you want to do? |
Lubricate the distal end of the NP airway with water soluble lubricant. |
After you have lubricated the airway, what will you want to do next? |
Insert the NP airway using the proper technique attempt Rt. nostril 1st, bevel against the septum then attempt left nostril, follow septum and turn 180 degrees just prior to full insertion. |
After you have inserted the airway what will you want to do next? |
Note that the flange rests against the nares opening. |
After you have seated the flange against the nares opening, what will you want to do next? |
Assess the patient's ventilations to ensure adequacy of placement and airway. |
After you have assessed ventilations and placement of airway, what will you want to do next? |
Discuss airway care and disposal (1 airway per patient, multiple uses per patient allowed.) |
