Why do some native people question the identity of other Native people?

If there are few of you fighting for the same resources then it's the question of identity to make more for yourself. Keep bigger pots of money for smaller groups. Some don't wan to admit they are Native because they will get treated better in the world

Federally - government to government relationship with the United States


State - only recognized by the state you are in (3 states recognized) (15 federally recognized)

What "special rights" do Indians have?

NO special rights - all same rights


Treaty rights because they were reserved for us due to giving up land but continue to have rights to the land.

Why should Native American's heritage be known by everyone?

It is everyone's history and can be an important part of your background. Europeans wouldn't have made it through without help of the Native American's.

Whose history is written and recorded?

Side that conquers the successful people. It was male because they were educated. Those who were able to write and who had money are the ones able to tell and write the story. Native American's didn't have access to printing and publishing.

Even though there are treaties in place between Native tribes and the US government, what issues are still points of contention?

1. Hunting and fishing rights


2. Different sovereignty issues (land is our mother - don't own)

Define unoccupied lands

Lands that were not occupied by Christians. Because it wasn't occupied by Christians it was okay to take it over.

Explain the role that white patrons of the arts and collectors had in shaping commercial Indian art.

Everyday items were not wanted. it was determined that the seller doesn't define what something is worth but the buyer states what they are willing to pay. Buyers want things like totem polls and dream catchers because "they" think that represents art. Native believe their beading or bowls are art but it's not wanted by European only want stereotypical "art" even though it was made by a Native American.
