Ampicillin
Aminopenicillin - Broader spectrum than penicillin G, killing more gram (-)s, esp E coli and other enterics
Amoxicillin
Aminopenicillin - Broader spectrum than penicillin G, killing more gram (-)s, esp E coli and other enterics
Methicillin
Beta Lactamase-Resistant Penicillin - Antistaphylococcal
Nafcillin, Oxacillin
Beta Lactamase-Resistant Penicillin, Anti-Staphylococcal
Dicloxacillin
Beta Lactamase-Resistant Penicillin, Anti-Staphylococcal
Carbenicillin
Anti-Pseudomonal Penicillins
Piperacillin
Anti-Pseudomonal Penicillins
Zosyn, Augmentin
Combo: Beta-Lactamase inhibitor + Penicillin to make a beta-lactamase resistant combination.
Broad coverage against the beta-lactamase producing bugs: Staph aureus, H flu, and Bacteroides fragiles
Cefepime
Fourth generation cephalosporin. Great gram (-) coverage AND good gram (+) coverage. Effective against Pseudomanas.
Ceftriaxone
Third generation cephalosporin.
Used for the multi-drug resistant aerobic gram (-)s that cause nosocomial pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, and UTIs.
Imipenem
New class of beta-lactam antibiotic.
Broades antibacterial activity known. (except MRSA, some Pseudomonas, and mycoplasma)
Aztreonam
Monobactam. Magic bullet for gram (-) aerobes, including Pseudomonas.
Chloramphnicol
Anti-ribosomal antibx. Kills most clinically important bacteria.
Clindamycin
Anti-ribosomal antibx - Lincosamine.
Gram positives and ANAEROBIC INFECTIONS, including Bacteroides.
Erythromycin
Macrolide, Anti-ribosomal antibx.
Gram positives (not active against gram -). Drug of choice for community-acquired pneumonia that does not require hospitalization.
Azithromycin, Clarithromycin
Macrolide, Anti-ribosomal antibx.
Same coverage as erythromycin PLUS severe staph infections and even MAI
Tetracycline/Doxycycline
Anti-ribosomal antibx. Think Tet offensive: Venereal chlamydia, mycoplasma walking pneumonia, Brucella, and Rickettsia
Gentamicin
Aminoglycoside.
Aerobic gram negative enterics. Effective against Pseudomonas.
Ciprofloxacin
Quinolone antibiotic.
Great against gram negatives, including Pseudomonas. Enterics, complicated UTIs, gram (-) facultative intracellular organisms.
Also Staph aureus osteomyelitis.
Vancomycin
ALL GRAM POSITIVES (Think opposite of aztreonam).
TMP/SMX
Inhibition of TH4 production. Kills many gram (-)s and (+)s. Mnemonic: TMPS - resp Tree, Mouth (GI), Pee (GU), and Syndrome (AIDS)
1st Generation cephalosporins.
Exceleent gram (+) coverage - esp when penicillin can't be tolerated.
