Bruised Nails

Dark purplish spots; usually due to injury. Occurs from blood clot under nail plate caused by injury to the nail bed.

Furrows/Corrugations

Wavy ridges caused by uneven nail growth; usually result of illness or injury. Depressions in the nail that run either lengthwise or across the nail; result from illness or injury, stress, or pregnancy. Can run either across or lengthwise. Lengthwise ridges can be caused by Psoriasis, poor circulation, or frost bite.

Discolored Nails

Nails turn a variety of colors; may indicate systemic disorder. Nails can be a variety of colors including yellow, blue, blue-gray, green, red, and purple. Can be caused by poor blood circulation, a heart condition, or topical or oral medications.

Eggshell Nails

Noticeably thin white nail plate that is more flexible than normal; may be caused by improper diet, illness, or medication. The nail is fragile and can break easily.

Hangnail (Agnail)

The cuticle splits around the nail. Caused by dry cuticles or cuticles that have been cut too closely to the nail.

Infected Finger

Redness, pain, swelling, or pus; refer to a physician.

Leukonychia (white spots)


[Loo - koh - nik- EE - uh]

Whitish discoloration of the nails; usually caused by injury to the base of the nail, air bubbles, or a bruise. The nail will eventually grow out.

Melanonychia [Mel - uh - nuh - nik - EE - uh]

Darkening of the finger nails or toenails. Results of increased and localized pigment cells within the matrix bed.

Onychatrophia [Ahn - Nik - uh - tro- fee- uh]

Atrophy or wasting away of the nail; cause by injury or disease. The nail loses it's shine, shrinks, and falls off. Caused by injury to the nail matrix or by internal disease.

Onychauxis (hypertrophy)


[Ahn - ih - kahk- sis]

Overgrowth in the thickness of the nail; caused by local infection, internal imbalance, or may be hereditary.

Onychophagy

Bitten Nails. Nails that have been bitten enough to become deformed.

Onychorrhexis

Abnormal brittleness with striation (lines) of the nail plate. Split, brittle nails that have a series of lengthwise ridges. Caused by injury, excessive use of cuticle solvents, nail polish removers, and careless, rough filing.

Plicated Nails

Folded nails.

Pterygium

Forward growth of the cuticle on the nail. If not treated the cuticle will grow over the nail and over the free edge.

Tile-shaped nails

Increased crosswise curvature throughout the nail plate.

Trumpet nails (pincer nails)

Edges of the nail plate curl around to form the shape of a trumpet or cone around the free edge.
