What are the effects of primary brain injury?
-Injury to brain tissue at the site of coup and contracoup
-Shearing and tearing of neurons throughout the brain
What are three signs of a basilar skull fracture?
Raccoon eyes, CSF out the nose, battle's sign (bruising behind the ear)
How do you measure severity of a coma?
-Duration of loss of cnsciousness
-Initial score on glasgow coma scale
-Length of post-traumatic amnesia
Levels of injury
1. Mild: 0-20 minute LOC, GCS= 13-15
2. Moderate: 20 min-6 hr LOC, GCS=9-12
3. Severe: >6hr LOC, GCS= 3-8
What happens when a baby is shaken?
1. Brain bangs against skull
2. Small blood vessels are torn - bleeding
3. Blood clots press on brain
4. Vertebrae crush the spinal cord

This leads to brain damage, retardation, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, paralysis, blindness, and death
What drug is given immediately following a spinal cord injury?
High doses of the steroid methylprednisone immediately following injury to suppress an unfavorable inflammatory reaction. This drug does not restore functions that are lost when axons are cut
What is the treatment of spinal injuries?
No current effective treatment, prevention is key
What is the treatment for symptomatic bradycardia?
Atropine 0.5-1.0 mg IV
