Dura Mater
Outermost layer of the meninges. 1st line of protection to the brain.
Epidural Space
Where meningeal arteries are located; between internal surface of skull and the dura mater.
Epidural Hematoma
Bleeding in epidural space.
Arachnoid
Spiderweb-like, transparent, membrane layer beneath the dura mater.
Pia Mater
"soft mother" Covers and is attached to brain cortex.
Subdural Hematoma
Rupture of veins that bridge from cortex to sagittal sinus of the brain.
Medulla
Controls breathing, heart rate and other automatic functions.
Cushing's Triad
Seen in increased ICP- bradycardia, hypertension, bradypnea.
Guillain-Barre syndrome
Autoimmune attack on the peripheral nerve myelin.
S/S of Guillain-Barre syndrome
Muscle weakness/paralysis, dysphagia, resp. distress, numbness.
Multiple Sclerosis
Chronic degenerative disease of CNS. Causes gradual destruction of myelin, interfering with nerve pathways.
S/S of Multiple Sclerosis
Numbness/Weakness in one or more limbs (usually on one side of body), loss of vision, tremor, lack of coordination, fatigue.
MS
Risk factors: females between ages of 20-40, heredity, mono, Caucasians, temperate climates.
Parkinson's Disease
Slowly progressing neurologic movement disorder caused by lack of dopamine in brain. Cells that produce dopamine become impaired or die. May be caused by genetics or exposure to environmental toxins.
S/S of Parkinson's
Tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, postural inability. May have mask-like, blank facial expression, difficulty chewing.
