Thinking in extremes--that things are either all good or all bad
Dichotomous thinking
Relates external events to oneself when it is not justified
Ex. My boss said our company's productivity was down this year, but I know he was really talking about me

Ex. I've burned the dinner, which goes to show just how incompetent I am

Thinking the worst about people and events
Ex. I'd better not apply for that promotion because I won't get it and then I'll feel terrible
Catastrophizing
Needing to do everything perfectly to feel good about oneself
Ex. I'll be a failure if I don't get an A on all my exams
Perfectionism
Excessive reasoning or logic used to avoid experiencing disturbing feelings
Intellectualization
Characteristics of some potentially addictive drugs that refers to the progressive need for more of the durg to achieve the desired effect
Tolerance
Characteristic of drug addiction that is present when the withdrawal of the drug results in physiological disruptions
Physical dependence
Characteristic of drug addiction that is manifested in a craving for the abused substance and a fear that it will not be available in the future
Psychological dependence
Use of any mind-altering agent to such an extent that it interferes with the person's biological, psychological or sociocultural integrity
Substance abuse
A severe condition of addictive behaviors often resulting in physical problems, as well as serious disruptions of work, family life and social life
