Temple of Zeus at Olympia
|
the most famous temple to Zeus in Greece. Heracles always went to this temple.

|
son of zeus and alcmene. hero who was tormented by hera for zeus' infidelities. in a fit of madness he killed his on children, after which he was required to perform 10 tasks given by Eurystheus.
he carried a club as his weapon of choice and is famous for killing the nemean lion. |

Iolaus
|
nephew of heracles who helped him with his 10 trials, most notably the hydra. he burned the heads as heracles cut them off so they would not regrow.

Nemean Lion
|
the first of heracles' 10 tasks was to kill the invincible nemean lion. he succeeded and wore the pelt of the lion in his later adventures.

Hydra
|
the nine headed beast that was heracles' 2nd task. after he cut one head off two more grew back, so iolaus helped him.
eurystheus didn't count this one since heracles had help. |

Stymphalian Birds
|
the birds with bronze beaks that ate men and terrorized villages. it was heracles' 6th task to get them away from the village. he shot many of them.

|
wild boar sacred to artemis, and heracles' fourth task was to capture the boar. he visited chiron, a centaur for advice on how to capture the bull.

|
main character of Virgil's Aenid. he is a direct descendant of Troy and is destined to found the city of Rome. the Aenid documents his adventure to reach Rome.
He is rescued from death twice in the Iliad by the gods. His mother is Aphrodite. |

wife of Aeneas who is left behind when Troy was sacked. She dies, but Aeneas goes back to look for her and only leaves when her ghost appears to him telling him it is okay to leave.

Laocoon
|
warned the Trojans not to accept the Trojan horse from the Greeks. he threw his spear at the horse in anger because they wouldn't heed his advice. he was subsequently killed by two serpents which came from the sea and swallowed him and his 2 sons.
the trojans took this to mean that they should accept the gift. |

|
pretended to have deserted the Greeks and presented the Trojans with the infamous horse that was to be their doom. told them it was a gift from the greeks to ensure their safe voyage home.
the greeks were hiding behind the rocks, and were waiting for the trojans to accept the gift. |

|
the queen of carthage who fled from her brother and founded her own city. aeneas washed up on her shore and she fell in love with him but he ultimately betrayed her. he was destined to found rome so he had to leave even despite their "unofficial" marriage ceremony. she committed suicide and cursed his name after he left.

Turnus
|
primary suitor of lavinia, king Latinus' daughter, until Aeneas arrives and she is instead promised to him. they become bitter enemies, and a war ensues.
turnus kills Pallas, the young boy entrusted to Aeneas, which is the ultimate cause of his death. In the duel between Aeneas and Turnus, Aeneas contemplates not killing Turnus, but upon seeing the belt of Pallas, he does. |
