Nerve: Axillary Nerve, (C5, C6)
Deltoid (pg. 123)
*shape muscle*
O: EOP, medial portion of superior nuchal line of occiput, ligamentum nuchae, and spinous process of C7-T12
I: Lateral 1/3 of clavicle, acromion, medial portion of spine of scapula. (same as Deltoid!)
A: Upper fibers: Extends the head and neck, extend, laterally flex, rotate the head, neck to the opposite side, *ELEVATE AND UPWARDLY ROTATE THE SCAPULA*. Middle fibers: Adduct the scapula, stabilizes scapula. Lower fibers: Depress and upwardly rotate the scaupla.
N: Spinal Accessory Nerve (aka CN XI)
Trapezius (pg. 117)
*shape muscle*
O: Spinous Process of T7-L5, Last 3 or 4 ribs, Thoracolumbar Aponeruosis, post. iliac crest, inferior angle of the scapula.
I: Crest of the lesser tubercle of the humerous (lateral)
A: *medial rotation*, adduction, extension.
N: Thoracodorsal Nerve
Latissimus Dorsi (pg. 118)
*Handcuff Muscle*
O: Dorsal surfaces of inferior angle, and lower half of the lateral border of the scapula
I: Crest of the lesser tubercle of the humerus (medial)
A: Extend, adduct, and medially rotate the humerus
N: subscapular nerve
Teres Major (pg. 128)
*handcuff muscle* *Lat's little helper*
Origin: Supraspinous fossa of the scapula. Insertion: Superior Greater Tubercle. Action: *abducts* the humerous first 15-20 degrees. Nerve: Suprascapular Nerve
Supraspinatus (pg. 124) *#1 of pitch, most commonly injured*
Origin: Infraspinous fossa.
Insertion: Posterior, superior greater tubercle of humerus.
Action: *laterally rotates*, abducts, and extend the shoulder joint.
Nerve: Suprascapular Nerve.
Infraspinatus (pg. 125) *#2 of pitch, strong lateral rotator*
Origin: Superior hald of the lateral border of the scaupla. Insertion: Posterior, inferior greater tubercle
Action: Laterally rotate, adduct, and extend the shoulder joint
Nerve: Axillary Nerve (same as the Deltoid)
Teres Minor (pg. 126) *#3 of pitch, going back to the minor leagues, NOT a handcuff muscle!*
Origin: Subscapular fossa. Insertion: Lesser Tubercle. Action: MEDIALLY ROTATES THE SHOULDER JOINT! Nerve: Subscapular Nerve (same as Teres Major)
Subscapularis (pg. 127) *#4 of pitch, strong medial rotator*
Origin: Spinous process of T2-T5. Insertion: Medial border of the scap. Action: Adduct (retraction), elevate, and downwardly rotate the scapula. Nerve: Dorsal Scapular Nerve.
Rhomboid Major (pg. 120) RETRACTION
ORIGIN OF MINOR: C7-T1
-flaring of scaps-
Origin: TRANSVERSE process of C1-C4. Insertion: Superior angle of medial border. Action: Elevate and downwardly rotate the scaupla, laterally flex the head and neck, extend the head and neck.
Nerve: Dorsal Scapular
Levator Scapula (pg. 119)
Origin: Surfaces of upper 8 or 9 ribs. Insertion: Anterior surface of medial border of the scapula. Action: Protraction of scapula. Nerve: Long Thoracic
Serratus Anterior (pg. 122) "boxer's muscle". SALTy boxer.
-can cause winging of scaps-
Origin: Medial half of the clavicle, sternum, cartilage of ribs 1-6. Insertion: Crest of the greater tubercle (or lateral lip of bicipital groove) Action: Adducts, Medially rotates, horizontally adducts, extension. Nerve: Pectoral Nerves (medial and lateral).
Pec Major (pg. 110). PRIME adductor, medial rotator.
Origin: 3rd, 4th, 5th ribs. Insertion: Coracoid Process of the Scap. Action: Depress, Adduct, and tilt the scap. Nerve: Medial Pectoral Nerve.
Pec Minor (pg. 111) can cause TOS.
Origin: 1st rib, associated cartilage. Insertion: Inferior, medial aspect of the clavicle. Action: Draws the clavicle down and forward, slightly elevates 1st rib. Nerve: 5th and 6th Cervical Nerves.
Subclavius (pg. 112) stabilizes the SC joint.
Origin: Short head- Coracoid process of scap. Long head- Supragelnoid tubercle of scap. Insertion: Tuberosity of the radius and aponeurosis of the biceps brachii. Action: Flex the elbow, supinate the forearm, flex the shoulder joint. Nerve: Musculocutaneous Nerve
Biceps Brachii (pg. 114)
Origin: Long head- Infraglenoid tubercle. Lateral head- Post. surface of proximal half of humerus. Medial head- Post. surface of distal half of humerus. Insertion: Olecranon process of Ulna. Action: Extend the elbow, adduct the shoulder joint. Nerve: Radial Nerve.
