Pityriasis (Tinea) Versicolor

  • Chronic superficial skin infection
  • Often young adults in tropical areas
  • Lesions are hypo- or hyperpigmented, scaly and itchy and fluoresce a pale greenish color under Wood's ultra-violet light

  • Lipophilic so must add olive oil to agar surface
  • Smooth, cream-colored yeast-like colonies

Phaeohyphomycosis or Tinea Nigra

  • Single, black spot with a distinct border
  • Usually on hands, bottom of feet, neck or chest
  • Causative agent is Hortaea werneckii

White Piedra

  • Infection of hair shaft
  • White to tan nodules adhering loosely to the hair shaft
  • Mycelia grow inward and penetrate hair cuticle
  • Caused by Trichoporon beigelii (T. cutaneum)

Black Piedra

  • Infection of hair shaft
  • Seen in tropical countries
  • Hard, black nodules tightly adhere to hair shaft
  • Causative agent is Piedraia hortae

Piedraia hortae

  • Dematiaceous fungus
  • Slow growing, dark greenish brown to black, velvety colony
  • Dark, thick walled, septate hyphae with intercalary chlamydoconidia
