solstice
either of the two times in the year, the summer solstice and the winter solstice, when the sun reaches its highest or lowest point in the sky at noon, marked by the longest and shortest days.
observatory
a room or building housing an astronomical telescope or other scientific equipment for the study of natural phenomena
meteorite
a meteor that survives its passage through the earth's atmosphere such that part of it strikes the ground. More than 90 percent of meteorites are of rock, while the remainder consist wholly or partly of iron and nickel.
reflecting telescope
a telescope in which a mirror is used to collect and focus light.
satellite
an artificial body placed in orbit around the earth or moon or another planet in order to collect information or for communication.
radio telescope
an instrument used to detect radio emissions from the sky, whether from natural celestial objects or from artificial satellites.
Pluto
the most remote known planet of the solar system, usually ninth in order from the sun, discovered in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh.
Mercury
a small planet that is the closest to the sun in the solar system, sometimes visible to the naked eye just after sunset.
equinox
the time or date (twice each year) at which the sun crosses the celestial equator, when day and night are of equal length (about September 22 and March 20)
revolution
motion in orbit or a circular course or around an axis or center.
electromagnetic spectrum
the range of wavelengths or frequencies over which electromagnetic radiation extends.
lunar eclipse
an eclipse in which the moon appears darkened as it passes into the earth's shadow.
waning
have a progressively smaller part of its visible surface illuminated, so that it appears to decrease in size
orbit
the curved path of a celestial object or spacecraft around a star, planet, or moon, esp. a periodic elliptical revolution.
solar system
the collection of nine planets and their moons in orbit around the sun, together with smaller bodies in the form of asteroids, meteoroids, and comets.
comet
a celestial object consisting of a nucleus of ice and dust and, when near the sun, a “tail” of gas and dust particles pointing away from the sun
asteroid
small rocky body orbiting the sun. Large numbers of these, ranging in size from nearly 600 miles across to dust particles, are found esp.
Jupiter :)
the largest planet in the solar system, a gas giant that is the fifth in order from the sun and one of the brightest objects in the night sky
solar eclipse
an eclipse in which the sun is obscured by the moon.
lunar eclipse
an eclipse in which the moon appears darkened as it passes into the earth's shadow.
Sphere
a round 3d object such as a planet like earth
axis
an fake line which a planet rotates.
ellipse
earth's year long orbit around the sun.
Refracting telescope
convex meaning bends out which means it magnifies an image .
