Ngoma
Music dominated by drumming with dancing includes performance aspects as well as “music”. May be a generic term for drums. May be used to mean music intended for dancing with a high value on drumming. Traditional music
Filulu-
A flute. It may be short of long. Made from hollow end of a dried calibash, it has 5 distinct pitches. Usually played as a solo instrument.
Taarab
A fusion of Arab and Indian melodies with rich, highly nuanced Swahili poetry performed at weddings , celebrations of rights of passage, and as a accompaniment to political issues and campaigns. Found along the Indian Ocean mainland coast and in the coastal islands of East Africa.
Bugbógóbo
A traditional music associated with the Sukuma culture. It facilitates work and makes labor easier. In post harvest rituals it is associated with a dance using hoes or igembe.
Embaire
A xylophone and performance tradition that includes 5 instrumentalists playing a wooden slat xylophone.
"Muliranwi"-
the song “my neighbor” played on the embaire. Others play percussion instruments and sing with the song. In the song timbre is an important element. Bystanders contribute to rhythms by clapping and dancing. It is a sad song typicly performed within the context of a larger evening long performance. The song’s text focuses on death and suggest being good to our neighbors while being alive.
Chakacha
a women’s traditional ngoma. It is associated with a belly-dance type movement. It is sung by women of the WaSwahili people of coastal Kenya and Tanzania. Performed throughout the contry of Kenya and at weddings. It is considered a taarab.

A festival and procession associated with Catholic Corpus Christi in Sukumaland. It includes music and dance competitions.

the leader of the choir. He is responsible for composing, teaching, conduction and preserving the choirs musical repertoire. This is a volunteer job.

A Ugandan musician. He plays many instruments including the endingidi, ntoogooli and endere. He now teaches traditional Ugandan music.
Endere
a Ugandan flute . It can be long or short. The sort endere is found in eastern Uganda and the long one in Western Uganda.

Ugandan onestring tubefiddle. Uses pentatonic scale.
Ntongooli
Bowl lire. It is a Ugandan instrument closely associated with Centurio Bulikoowa. Played as a solo instrument.

Ugandan composer. He is trained in western compostition and used a string quartet to try to explore the sounds of Ugandan music and instruments.

A traditional dance and music that originated in the Baganda court when the king was said to be “happy”. Today there is a form for the kind and for the local people.

A Kenyan nyatiti (lyre) player. He is a professional musician that makes money by singing praise songs rooted in the tradition of the Luo people of Kenya.
