Describe the evolution of the motet.
MIDEAVAL MOTET
Motets began paraliturgical and in Latin in the early 13th century. Evolved to French, secular, Courtly love in the late 13th century. (Frankonian motet occured at this time also) Early 14th century isorhythmic motet.
RENAISSANCE MOTET
15th century. Latin, paraliturgical, simple rhythms and melodic lines.
Late 15th century motet becomes cutting edge under Josquin.
Describe the evolution of the Chansons.
Early 12th Troubadours. Always secular. Emphasis on poetry, monophonic. Early 14th the formes fixes were evident, making the chanson polyphonic. The century also included the Italian treccento repertoire. The 15th, the mass was a big deal, so sometimes the cantus firmus could be drawn from a chanson.
Who was Dunstable's successor?
Ockeghem.
Where/for whom did Dunstable work?
Duke of Burgundy. The fields of the 100 years war.

Dunstable brought it. Du Fay made it popular.

Pure northern style. No cadences. No imitation. Smooth melodic lines, texture. Thick texture, but independent voices.
