Context
What is Debussy's "Prelude to the afternoon of a Faun"?
It's an acient pagan nature-god, guardian of herds and patron of country pursuits.
what was the inspiration for this piece?
It was inspired by a poem which was written by his friend Stephane Mallarme, the great french poet.
Why does Debussy describe the work as a "Prelude"?
Because he intended to follow it with two further movements.
Why is it sometimes decribed as a tone poem?
Because it's a type of orchestral work that uses music to tell a story (although Debussy made it clear that his music was intended only as "a very free illustration of the poem".)

It was designed for concert hall

It was performed on 22nd December 1894 (Although it is heard in theatres where it is performed as a ballet score.)
