Pulse-

A regular occurrence of a beat or beats in the music.

Events of beats

Rhythm-

A basic pattern of sound and silence. It can be steady pulse or beat, or it can be made up of regular repeated groupings.

Accent-

An increase in the stress on a beat. Shifting the accent away from the first beat of a bar creates a more irregular feeling in the rhythm. A syncopation is created when the shift is set in a regular measured rhythm. Jazz and tap use syncopation; syncopation is exciting in dance as the accents fall in unexpected places and give an element of surprise.

Time Signature-

A number telling you the amount of beats which make up a repeated group. It's always shown at the start of the music. The time is divided up by a regular accent and this gives the metre. The number of beats in a bar gives the time signature e.g.- 2/4. The top number shows how many beats are in the bar (2). The lower shows what kind of note received the count.

Tempo-

The speed of the beat.

Tempo is measured by bpm by a metronome.

Presto=approximately 180 bpm ( beats per minute )

Adagio=approximately 100 bpm

Dynamics-

The volume of music.

Forte=loud

Piano=soft

Crescendo= increase

Diminuendo=decrease

Pitch-

The frequency of the note.

How high or low

Tone-

Characteristics of sound relating to pitch, strength and quality. (As in dynamics in dance)

Texture-

Relates to the layering of the music. Relationship between melody, rhythm, beat and more.

Climax-

An exiting moment or moments in the music. (Same as in dance)

Intensity-

The degree of force in the music.

Instrumentation-

Identification and arrangement of instruments or sounds.
