First published as a serial named "A string of pearls" in a Penny Dreadful by George Didbin Pitt. The original play based of the serials was by Thomas Picket Prest. Finally, a 1973 play version was done by Christopher Bond that transformed the previous versions of Todd into sympathetic-- this version inspired Sondheim. |

Grimms' brothers tales Early in career Sondheim tried to musicalize Mary Poppins but failed. Later he and Lapine used Carl Jung's theories and Bruno Bettelheim's "Uses of Enchantment" which focuses on importance of fairy tales to create an interlocking story. |
