How can bones be classified?

By shape:

Short- Carpals, Tarsals

Flat- Clavicle, Scapula, Ribs, Sternum, Skull bones

Long- Femur, Humerus, R&U, T&F, Metacarpals/Tarsals, Phalanges

Irregular- Bones of face, Vertebrae, Pelvis

Sesamoid- Patella

Bones that are more porous have.....

Smaller proportion of Calcium carbonate/Phosphate

More non-mineraized tissue

Bones can also be classified by

Degree of Porosity

Low porosity= Cortical bone

-less flexible

-can resist stress

Found in long bones

High porosity= Spongy bone

-more flexible

-shock absorption

Eg Vertebrae

What are the major components of bone

Calcium Carbonate

Calcium Phosphate

Collagen

Water

Effect of fitness on bone

Becomes denser and more mineralized

What makes up the Axial skeleton

Skull

Sternum

Ribs

Vertebrae

Sacrum

80 bones

What makes up the Appendicular skeleton

Pelvic girdle

Pectoral girdle

Upper and Lower limbs

126 bones

Axial skeleton......

Supports, stabilizes and protects vital organs.

Appendicular skeleton.....

Responsible for large portion of movement

Skull

Made up of the Calvaria and the Face

Calvaria- Protects brain

Frontal, Occipital, Parietal, Temporal, Sphenoid.

Face- Nasal, Lacrimal, Zygomatic, Maxilla, Mandible.

Most fragile of the Calvaria bones

Temporal

It overlies the major blood vessel that supplies the membrane protecting the brain.

If fractured or displaced it can cause Epidural Haemorrhage.

What is Epidural Haemorrhage

Bleeding between the skull and the protective membrane protecting the brain.

Vertebral column

Protects spinal cord and nerves

35 in total

7 cervical (neck)

12 thoracic (chest)

5 lumbar (lower back)

1 sacrum (midline region of buttocks)

Made up of 5 fused Vertebrae.

1 coccyx (tail bone) 4/5 fused Vertebrae.

Ribs nd Sternum

1-7= True ribs, attached to both Sternum and Vertebrae

8-10= False ribs, attached to Vertebrae directly and Sternum indirectly

11&12= Floating ribs, attached to Vertebrae only

Sternum has how many parts ?

3

Manubrium

Sternal body

Xiphoid process

On the lateral surface of the os coxae ...

Is a cup shaped Acetabulum for the head of the Femur

Tibia nd Fibula

Medial

Lateral
