WhaT IS THE AXILLA?
THE gateway to the upper limb
What does the axilla consist of?
formed by the calivle, scapula, the upper thoracic wall, the humerus, and related muscles
Where is the axillary inlet's apex pointing?
laterally
What major blood vessel supplies the auuper limb?
the subclavian artery
What happens to the subclavian artery as it enters the axilla?
it becomes the axillary artery
What is the axillary wall composed of?
pectoralis major, subclavis, and pectorales minor, and the clavipectoral fascia
where are the pectoralis major attachments?
attach 1- sternum, clavicle, and upper ribS
attach 2- anterior proximal humeral shaft
Where are the pectorali minor attachments?
attach 1- anterior surfaces and upper margins of rib 3 to 5
attach 2- inserts to coracoid processes
What are the muscles of the pectoralis group?
pectoralis major and minor
what are the muscles of the brachial group?
-coracobrachialis
-biceps brachii
-brachialis
What are the attachments of the coraccobrachilis?
attach 1-originates from apex of corracoid process
attach 2- medial proximal humeral shaft
What are the attachmens of the biceps brachii (shorthead)?
attach 1- originates from apex of coracoid process
attach 2- radial tuberosity
what are the attachments of the biceps brachii (longhead)?
attach 1- originates as a tendon from the supragenoid tubercle-transverse humeral ligament
attach 2- radial tuberosity
what are the actions of the coraccobrachilis?
flexes arm and adducts armq
what are the actions of the briceps brachii?
flexor of forearm, supination
what are teh actions of the pectorales group?
flexion adduction, and medial rotation of arm
(minor- pulls tip of shoulder down, protracts scapula
What are the muscles that move the scapula?
-serratus anterior
-trapezius
-levator scapulae
-rhomboids (mjaor/minor)
what are the attachments of the trapezzius?
attach 1- nuchal ligament, cervial & thoracis spinous process
attach 2- lateral clavicle, acromion & spine of scapula
what are the actions of the trapezius?
powerful elevator and rotates the scapula
what nerve innervates the trapezius?
accesory nerve[XI]
What are the levator scapulae attachments?
attach 1- transverse process of atlas, axis
attach 2- superior angle of scapula
What is the action of the levator scapula?
elevates the scapula
what is the levator scapulae innervated by?
dorsal scapular nerves
What are the attachments of the rhomboids?
attach 1- medially top the medial border of the scapula
attach 2- lower cervical and uper thoracic spinous processes
what never supplied the rhomboids?
the dosrsal scapular nerve- braches from brachial plexu
what are the actions of the rhomboids?
elevates and retracts the scapula
