16 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back
  • 3rd side (hint)
Serratus posterior superior
Orig: Lower part of ligamentum nuchae
Spines of C7 and T1-3

Ins: Upper borders and outer surfaces of ribs 2-5 lateral to their angles
Action: Elevates upper ribs, but maybe not in respiration

N: VENTRAL RAMI of T2-5
Serratus posterior inferior
Orig: Spines of T11-12 and L1-3

Ins: Lower borders and outer surfaces of ribs 9-12 lateral to their angles
Action: Possibly involved in respiration

N: VENTRAL RAMI of T-9-12
Splenius capitis
Orig: from lower half of ligamentum nuchae and spines of C7-T4

Ins: into mastoid process and lateral third of superior nuchal line
Action: Acting bilaterally, extend head and neck
Acting unilaterally, side bend and rotate head to same side

N: DORSAL RAMI of C2-5
Splenius cervicis
Orig: From spines of T3-6

Ins: into posterior transverse tubercles of C1-3
Action: Acting bilaterally, extend head and neck
Acting unilaterally, side bend neck and rotate head and neck to same side

N: Dorsal rami of C2-5
Iliocostalis
Orig: medial surface of back of iliac crest and spines of T11-L5

Ins: angles of ribs and posterior transverse tubercles as high as C4 (cervicis, thoracis, lumborum)
Action: Acting bilaterally, extends spine and head
Acting unilaterally, side bends and rotates spine and head to same side
Portions originating on pelvis can anteriorly tilt pelvis

N: DORSAL RAMI of cervical, thoracic and lumbar spinal nerves
Longissimus
(capitis, cervicis and thoracis)
Orig: medial surface of back of iliac crest and spines of T11-L5

Ins: transverse processes, lower 9 or 10 ribs between tubercles and angles, and mastoid process
Action: Acting bilaterally, extends spine and head
Acting unilaterally, side bends and rotates spine and head to same side
Portions that originate on pelvis can anteriorly tilt pelvis

N: DORSAL RAMI of cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spinal nerves
Spinalis
(mostly thoracic, maybe cervicis)
Orig: medial surface of back of iliac crest and spines of T11-L5

Ins: spines between L2 and T2
Action: Acting bilaterally, extends spine and head
Acting unilaterally, side bends and rotates spine and head to same side
Portions that originate on pelvis can anteriorly tilt pelvis

N: DORSAL RAMI of cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spinal nerves
Semispinalis
(capitis, cervicis, thoracis)
Orig: extends from lower thoracic region in bundles

Ins: between superior and inferior nuchal lines on occipital bone
Action: Acting bilaterally, extends spine and head
Acting unilaterally, side bends spine to same side and rotates to opposite side

N: DORSAL RAMI of spinal nerves
Multifidus
Orig: Sacrum (S4), with bundles spanning 2-3 vertebrae

Ins: Axis (C2)
Action: Acting bilaterally, extends spine
Acting unilaterally, side bends spine to same side and rotates to opposite side

N: DORSAL RAMI of spinal nerves
Rotatores
(brevis and longus)
Orig: span one (brevis) or two (longus) vertebrae in thoracic region

Insertion: spanning 1-2 vertebrae
Action: Acting bilaterally, extends spine
Acting unilaterally, side bends spine to same side and rotates to opposite side

N: DORSAL RAMI of spinal nerves
Interspinalis
Orig: paired, between adjacent spines in cervical and lumbar regions

Ins: Spine to spine
Action: extension of the spine

N: DORSAL RAMI
Intertransversarii
Orig: between adjacent transverse processes in cervical and lumbar regions

Ins: Transverse process to transverse process
Action: Side bending

N: DORSAL RAMI
Rectus capitis posterior major
Origin: Spine of axis

Ins: Lateral part of inferior nuchal line
Action: Extends and rotates head to same side

N: DORSAL RAMUS of C1 (suboccipital nerve)
Rectus capitis posterior minor
Origin: Posterior tubercle of atlas

Ins: Medial part of inferior nuchal line
Action: Extends head

N: DORSAL RAMUS of C1 (suboccipital nerve)
Obliquus capitis inferior
Origin: Spine of axis

Ins: Transverse process of atlas
Action: Rotates head to same side

N: DORSAL RAMUS of C1 (suboccipital nerve)
Obliquus capitis superior
Orig: Transverse process of atlas

Ins: Between superior and inferior nuchal lines
Action: Extends and side bends head

N: DORSAL RAMUS of C1 (suboccipital nerve)
