Main characteristic of muscle tissue (specialized for contraction, a rich blood supply, abundant mitochondria, multinucleated, etc…)
•Muscle tissue has four main characteristics: elastic (go back to original shape), excitable (generates electrical impluse), extensible (stretch without damage), and contractile (able to shorten)
Functions of Skeletal Muscle
•Produce skeletal movement:
o Skeletal muscle contractions pull on tendons and move bones of the skeleton
oThe effects range from simple motions, such as extending the arm or breathing, to the highly coordinated movements of swimming, skiing, or typing.
•Maintain posture and body position:
oTension in our skeletal muscles maintains body posture
o Example holding your head still when you read a book or balancing your body weight above your feet when you walk.
