Muscle function
* stabilize joint
*moves skeleton (support and mobility).
*heat production (thermoregulation)
*circulatory assistance.
Smooth muscle
*involuntary
*esophagus and digestive tract.
*walls of hollow organs
* non straited, shaped like an almond, one nucleus and tapered.
Cardiac muscle
*involuntary
* striated,branched, one nucleus
*the heart
Skeletal muscles
*voluntary
*striated, multinucleated
*muscles around skeletal system.
Striated vs non striated
*striated: has sacromeres (A and I bands)
* Non striated like smooth muscles has no sacromeres but still contain myosin and actin.
Motor neurons
*signals muscles and organs to do stuff.
*somatic and automatic motor neurons
somatic motor neuron
*controls skeletal muscles
automatic motor neurons
*controls involuntary (smooth and cardiac) muscles
How does muscle contraction work?
*Action potential reaches the axon terminal.
*Release neurotransmitters unto the synapses
*the receptors on the base plate of the muscle (sacomere) picks up the signal
*when threshold is reached the action potential moves along the sarcomeres and contracts the muscle.
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
* Sympathetic: fight or flight.
*heart beats fast
* pupils dilate
*blood pressure goes up
*blood goes to muscles and not to digestive tracts
Parasympathetic: resting.
*heart rate goes down
*pupils constrict
*blood pressures goes down and blood goes to digestive tracts.
