Le Roman de Fauvel
A satirical 14th Century poem by Gervais de Bus to which Phillip de Vitry later set motets. The main character of the poem, fauvel represents the French government, and the poem details the resentment of the people against that government. The motets of this poem show use of isorhythm and early uses of red and black coloration for mensural notation.
Guillame de Machaut
14th century poet and composer of the French Ars Nova. He worked to develop the motet and composed the Messe de Nostre Dame, which was the first full setting of the Mass Ordinary. He also developed the secular formes fixes of song styles.
Ars Nova
A worldwide trend in music in the 13-15th centuries developments in isorhythm, development of a more precise mensural system, and development of secular song formes fixes.
Ballata
an Italian secular song form that developed during the trecento. Poetically, the ballata resembles the virelai with its AbbaA form, and is most-often polyphonic.
DLT Cadences
popular in the 14th and 15th centuries, the DLT features motion from raised 4th and raised 7th in two upper voices to an open fifth and octave at the cadence. Example here is seen in the Kyrie of Guillame de Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame.
Rondeau
a 14th century French formes fixes that features an eight line stanza that follows the form ABaAabAB. Capital letters indicate refrain material, while lowercase letters feature new text set to refrain material.
Formes Fixes
Secular song forms developed during the 14th and early 15th century. French formes fixes include the ballade, rondeau and virelai, while Italian formes fixes include the ballata, madrigal, and caccia.
Messe de Nostre Dame
Guillame de Machaut's polyphonic setting of the Mass Ordinary completed in the 1360's. The mass is characteristic of the Ars Nova style, as evidenced through use of a more precise mensural notation, use of isorythm, and double leading tone cadences (especially in the kyrie).
Phillipe De Vitry
In the 14th century, he wrote a treatise on the ars nova that would eventually come to define the French style of music throughout the century. He devloped a more precise system of mensuration to replace the old system of rhythmic modes, and developed motets and secular song forms.
Lai
a French song form featuring 12 stanzas that each contained their own music, except for the last stanza, which contained the same music as the first stanza
