Music is the rational organization of sounds and silences passing through time. Tones must be arranged in some consistent, logical, and (usually) pleasing way before we can call these sounds "music" instead of just noise.

Dr.Howard's definition of music

the combination of sound and/or silence that is intended or perceived as art

timbre is produced by...

different elements vibrating

4 instrumental families

string, brass, woodwind, percussion

string instruments --> arco (uses bow)

guitar, violin, cell, harp, pizzicato, viola, bass

plucking violin

how the elements work together

texture

3 types of texture

monophonic, polyphonic, homophonic

melody by itself

monophonic

many melodies sounding at the same time

polyphonic

a melody with an accompaniment; many voices at same time with a basic rhythm

homophonic

many voices, can't make out sounds (ex. Ligeti)

micropoliphony
