Ocean

A very large expanse of sea, in particular, each of the main areas into which the sea is divided geographically.

Epipelagic Zone


(Sunlight Zone)

The uppermost part of the oceanic zone, lying above the mesopelagic zone, that receives enough sunlight to allow photosynthesis. Extends from sea level to a depth of 200 meters (~sea level to 660 feet)

Mesopelagic Zone


(Twilight Zone)

The part of the pelagic zone that extends from a depth of 200 to 1000 meters (~660 to 3300 feet) below the ocean surface.

Bathypelagic Zone


(Midnight Zone)

The part of the pelagiczone that extends from a depth of 1000 to 4000 meters (3300 to 13000 feet) below the ocean surface. It lies between the mesopelagic above, and the abyssopelagic below.

Habitat

The natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other organism.

Biome

A large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat.

Predator

An animal that naturally preys on others.

Prey

An animal that is hunted or killed by another for food.
