How do we know that people that lived long ago had dental problems?

Teeth outlast all other skeletal remains.

Why do teeth outlast other skeletal remains?

Because teeth have an outer layer called enamel which is the hardest substance in the human body, even harder than bone.

They didn't clean their teeth and their diet was gritty.

What did people of earlier times think caused a toothache?

What were some of the cures for a toothache?

A mixture of spiders, eggshells, and oil; biting on a piece of wood that has been struck by lightning; finding a frog in the light of the full moon, prying its mouth open, spitting into it, and saying, "Frog, go, and take my toothache with thee!" You could be advised to kiss a donkey, run around a church three times without thinking of a fox, place a living louse in a hole bored in a bean and wear it around your neck, carry a mole's tooth, or pick your teeth with a nail of the middle toe of an owl.
