First section in sonata form but has a structure of it's own...

Development
The second section in sonata form.
In this section the material fom the exposition is developed through a variety of keys.
Recapitulation
Last section in sonata form.
Material from exposition is repeated but the key stays centred on the tonic key.
Anacrusis
When a melody starts on the last beat of a bar.
The melody does not start on a strong beat.
Chromatic
Moving by semitones.
Syncopation
Stress/emphasis on the off beat where it would not normally be.
Codetta
Italian for little tail.
Usually found at the end of a section of music within a larger piece.
Contrapuntal
Same as polyphonic (different parts weaving in and out of each other).
Counter-melody
secondary melody played against the primary melody. Resulting in counterpoint.
Imitation
A melody that is repeated shortly after it's first appearance by another voice/instrument.
Pedal
Single note held or repeated.
