What class is Morphine Sulfate?

strong opioid analgesic

What does Morphine do?
|
effects of analgesia. It increases peripheral venous capacitance and decreases venous return. **Causes euphoria and respiratory and CNS depression. Depressed responsiveness of alpha-adrenergic receptors and baroreceptor inhibition. **decreases Myocardial O2 demand.

Onset: 1-2 min after admin.

Why do you give Morphine?
|
Chest pain associated with MI
Pulmonary edema, with or w/o pain. Moderate to severe acute and chronic pain. |

Contraindications?
|
Hypersensitivity, Hypovolemia, Hypotension, head injury or undiagnosed abdominal pain, ICP, Severe Res. Depression, Pt who have taken MAOI with 14 days.

What might you see when you give morphine?
|
Hypotension, tachycardia, bradycardia, palpitations, syncope, facial flushing, diaphoresis, itching, respiratory depression, euphoria, bronchospasm, dry mouth, allergic reaction.

How is it supplied?
|
Tablets, Suppositories, and Solution.
Parenteral preparations available in many strengths. common **10mg in 1 mL of solution ampules and tubex syringes. |

How is it given?
|
IV push up to 15mg
diluted in 5ml or more NS or sterile H2O give slowly over 4-5 minutes or more |

What are some risk or special considerations?
|
Pregnancy safety: B
use in cation with elderly used with cation in chronic pain. Inferior MI may worsen **NALOXONE and respiratory support should be readily available. |
