Morphine Trade Names
DuraMorph, MS Contin
Morphine Classification
Narcotic Analgesic, Opiate Agonist, Schedule 2
Morphine Action
Binds with opiate receptors. Capable of inducing hypotension by depression of the vasomotor centers of the brain.
Release of histamine.
Reduces stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system caused by pain and anxiety.
Reduction of sympathetic stimulation reduces HR, cardiac work and myocardial oxygen consumption.
Morphine Indications
Moderate to Severe pain, including chest pain associated with ACS, CHF, Pulmonary adema
Morphine Routes of Administration
IV, IM, SC, IV infusion
Morphine Contraindications
Respiratory depression, shock, known sensitivity. Use caution in hypotension, acute bronchial asthma, respiratory insufficiency, head trauma.
Morphine Adverse Effects
Respiratory depression, hypotension, N/V/DZ, lightheadedness, sedation, diaphoresis, euphoria, dysphoria, worsening of bradycardia and heart block in some patients with acute inferior wall MI, seizures, cardiac arrest, anaphylactoid reactions

C
