Joseph Smith

Why was it started?

Smith was visited by the Angel Moroni. Who told him that gold tablets written by tribes of Israel had been hidden waiting for someone to restart the true church of Christ ready for Christ's reappearance.

Why is there no real proof of the golden plates?

Only Joseph smith saw the plates. He dictated what they said from behind a curtain so they never saw the plates. Although 8 people signed to say they saw them.
