Smith was visited by the Angel Moroni. Who told him that gold tablets written by tribes of Israel had been hidden waiting for someone to restart the true church of Christ ready for Christ's reappearance. |

They reamed the town and were allowed to develop as an independent city state and make own laws. Mormons were hard working and in 1844 it was biggest city in Illinois and described as best built in west. 35000 Mormons now lived there. Had army of 4000 men. |

Kept themselves to themselves. 1844 introduction of polygamy by smith. Smith burnt printing presses. Dictator like. Non Mormons hated the idea of polygamy. Rumours smiths wanted to be president. Smith shot in 1845 by non Mormon mob |
