moral relativism
no such thing as moral truth
objective moral truths do not exist
right and wrong are NOT absolute and unchanging
right and wrong are relative (to certain things)
Objective truth -
this is the kind of truth that is grounded in something outside of the subject
Subjective truth
- this is the kind of truth that is grounded in (or based upon) the invidividual (i.e. the subject)
Subjectivism -
“what is right” is up to the individual person
Conventionalism -
“what is right” = what the culture says is right
Problems with subjectivism
1. If Subjectivism is true, then morality becomes empty or useless

2. Subjectivism leads to the (absurd) conclusion that everyone is on the same moral level
Problems with Conventionalism
1. If the origin of morality lies with culture then:
No cultures = no morality
Cultures are morally infallible (no cross-cultural criticism)
2. It is impossible to have a “moral” social reformer
3. It seems difficult to define a “culture” and determine which culture a person is a part of
