Abortion

The Salvation Army believes all people are created in the image of God and therefore have unique and intrinsic value. Human life is sacred and all people should be treated with dignity and respect. The Salvation Army accepts the moment of fertilisation as the start of human life. We believe that society has a responsibility to care for others, and especially to protect and promote the welfare of vulnerable people, including unborn children.

Human Trafficking

The Salvation Army is deeply committed to fighting human trafficking however it may be manifested. We seek to exercise care in restoring the freedom and dignity of those affected.

Suicide Prevention

The Salvation Army believes that every possible means should be taken to prevent a person from intentionally taking his or her own life, or seeking the assistance of someone else to do so. While suicide may be primarily a medical or mental health problem (among others), protective factors such as social support and connectedness play a significant role in its prevention. Suicide prevention is everyone's business. Prevention may be a matter of a caring person with the right knowledge being available at the right place at the right time.

SABBATH OBSERVANCE

The Salvation Army values and proclaims the scriptural teaching that God, our Creator, established a rhythm of life for our benefit. This is reflected in the Creation narrative (Genesis 2:2-3), the fourth commandment (Exodus 20:8-11, Deuteronomy 5:12-15) and in the teachings of Jesus regarding a balanced approach to life. Therefore, regardless of the day of the week on which it is observed, the principle of Sabbath observance provides that opportunity to rest, to give thanks and to worship.

The State

The Salvation Army is politically non-partisan. Although it seeks to influence governmental and public affairs, it will not promote or endorse specific candidates or political parties.

In working with any State and its agencies, The Salvation Army seeks to promote biblical values, including justice, truth, mercy, equity, human rights and peace, as part of its religious convictions and practice.

Use of Power

The Salvation Army believes that power is neither good nor evil in itself. It is, rather, the purposes to which power is applied and the manner in which it is used that define its character.

As a Christian church, The Salvation Army believes that almighty God always exercises his power for righteous purposes.

As an extension of this, The Salvation Army believes that power, whether it is economic, emotional, legal, physical, political, psychological, religious or social, should always be exercised so as to promote the values of the Kingdom of God, such as love, justice and mutual respect. It should never be used for manipulation or exploitation.

The Salvation Army strongly opposes any use of power that is oppressive, cruel or corrupt, or that denies human rights.

Gambling

The Salvation Army is opposed to gambling. The nature of gambling lends itself to exploitative, deceptive and manipulative practices. It is contrary to Christian principles of love, freedom from oppression and concern for others.

As such it should not be a means of income generation or economic development, whether by government agencies, charitable organisations, churches or commercial interests.

EUTHANASIA AND ASSISTED SUICIDE

The Salvation Army believes strongly that all people deserve compassion and care in their suffering and dying. Euthanasia and assisted suicide should not, however, be considered acceptable responses. They undermine human dignity and are morally wrong. The Salvation Army believes therefore that euthanasia and assisted suicide should be illegal.

CORRUPTION

The Salvation Army strongly condemns corruption in its entirety.

The Salvation Army is aware of and abhors the suffering that individuals, groups and nations endure because of corrupt behaviour by people in positions of power and those entrusted with the management of public and private resources. It accepts responsibility to work towards the eradication of corruption whether individual, organisational or institutional, resulting in a more equitable environment for all concerned.

The Salvation Army is committed in addition to prevent, identify and eliminate internal corruption.

PORNOGRAPHY

The Salvation Army believes that all persons are created in God’s image and affirms the sanctity of the human body and relationships, based on the teaching of Scripture. Pornography is seen as a violation of these. Therefore, its production, distribution and use should be discouraged.

Speaking in Tongues

Paul does not mention it as a gift. NT support gives "no support to the idea that tongues constitute an essential sign of a deeper work of grace in the life of the Christian". Paul though to be the least of the gifts of the Spirit. Easily endanger the credibility and fellowship of Christian people b/c of pride, envy, pretense, presumption and divisiveness.

Gray areas which Biblical principles not clear and areas that Scripture does not directly address. .. no giving certain cultural norms is considered important. Discuss this:

What seems to be absent from the diversity of styles of moral reasoning is any appeal to relativism, either cultural relativism (in which morality is determined by the cultural consensus) or moral subjectivism (in which right and wrong are determined by one's individual tastes and preferences). B/c of the transcendent source for Christian ethics, it is presumed that morality cannot be confined to the dictates of culture, not to mention a person's subjective preferences. There is a presumption of universality to christian ethics that comes from the virtues and principles being grounded in God's character and commands respectively. Because of this transcendent grounding, the Biblical authors find it difficult to see morality as anything but universally applicable. There are gray areas in which the biblical principles are not clear and areas the Scripture does not directly address. In those cases not giving offense to certain cultural norms is important...no where in Scripture does a cultural norm take priority over a clear mandate from God's character or biblical principles.

Moral Issues with GIFT

The odds are that there will be leftover unused eggs, which are normally fertilized in vitro and held in frozen storage up to five years, in case the initial procedure does not produce a pregnancy. The problem then becomes what do with the remaining embryos.

A) Nonviolent pacifism-no violence of any kind. B) Nonparticipation pacifism-cannot even participate in behind the scenes work

2. Just War-war can be morally justifiable under certain conditions.

a) war must be prompted by a just case.

b) just intentions.

c) engaged in as a last resort.

d) initiated with a formal declaration by properly constituted authorities.

e) characterized by limited objectives.

f) conducted with proportionate means
