Use of PCR in forensics
VNTRs are used in forensics through RFLP analysis or PCR amplification by using a small amount of material (i.e. skin, hair, or blood) compared against a known sequence of material from the scene of the crime.
VNTRs
VNTRs stand for variable number of tandem repeats that consist of a unique set of repetitive DNA sequences.
biotechnology products
Products that could be produced using molecular techniques include agricultural pesticides/environmental sprays, perhaps growth/muscle mass in animal production industries, medicines tailored to the genetics (or diseases) of individuals (maybe by utilizing SNPs, CYP genotype, or the molecular basis of a disease), gene therapy, synthetic molecules in drug production (antisense, recombinant, pharmed), tissue transplantation, and embryonic stem cells.
gene frequency population analysis
In order to do this sort of calculation with RFLP and VNTR bands, the probability of each band in the population must be known. Unfortunately, this is not yet known. Furthermore, we know from other genetic studies that populations can differ in their probability.
