What is WAN and LAN?

LAN is generally confined to a limited geographicalarea such as a building oran office;connects in small space.

WAN covers a large geographical area; connects over broad space. Most WANs are made up of severalconnected LANs.

What is an interface and the types of interfaces.

Interfaces

- A boundary across which twoindependent systems meet and act on or communicate with each other.

1. user interface - thekeyboard, mouse, menus of a computer system. The user interface allows the userto communicate with the operating system.

2. software interface - thelanguages and codes that the applications use to communicate with each otherand with the hardware.

3. hardware interface - thewires, plugs and sockets that hardware devices use to communicate with each other

Graphical User Interface
- User interacts with menus and visual images such as buttons andother graphical objects to issue commands.
Allows keyboard, point, click, and drag .

What is the operating system?

A. Operating System

Consists of master programs - RAM
Manage basic operations
Decides what resources will be used and for how long
Memory
Flow Control
-BIOS (input/output)
File Management
-Windows XP
-Mac OS
-Vista
-Free Open Source Software(FOSS) - Linux

Know the types of networks.

Types of Networks:

1. Local Area Network (LAN) – a network that spans a smallarea such as a building or an office.

Software applications and otherresources are stored on a file server.

Print servers enable multiple users to share the sameprinter.

2. Wide Area Network (WAN) – a network that spans a widegeographical area; there are several types of WANS:

a. Metropolitan area network(MAN)

b. Public access network (PAN)

c. Value added network (VAN)

d. Virtual private network (VPN)

Know the different types of internet, Ethernet, and extranet.

Internet - is a large network made up of many smaller networks. EX. one city mayconnect to other cities and that creates a region. That region might connect toanother region; for example, the western United States may connect to theMidwestern portion of the United States.

Ethernet - sends internet data from one node to another in packets.

Intranet - Allows companies to supplyInternet services over a LAN. It is a closed internet, inside the company. EX. LOLA

Extranet - Allowscompanies to directly communicate with each other’s networks EX. A book publisher gives access to her students to her book that is on the Internet.

Different types of memory – cache, RAM, ROM
