The Nine Steps to Achieving Christian Excellence (according to Mt. Juliet Messenger, April 25, 1999)

*DECIDE YOU WANT TO EXCEL (Philippians 1:10 "that you may approve the things that are excellent.")

*FOLLOW THE APOSTLES‘ PATTERN (2 Thessalonians 2:15 "Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle.")

*CONCENTRATE ON WHAT WORKS FOR YOU (1 Corinthians 12:12, 27 "For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.")

*TAKE THE INITIATIVE AND START (Ecclesiastes 9:10 "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might.")

*CONCENTRATE ON THE BENEFITS AS WELL AS THE OBLIGATIONS (Matthew 25:23 "His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’")

*REMEMBER THE PAST TO HELP YOU, BUT NOT TO HURT YOU (Philippians 3:13-14 "forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.")

*BE CONFIDENT, BUT NOT CONCEITED (2 Timothy 1:7 "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.")

*COMPARE WITH OTHERS FOR MOTIVATION, BUT NOT TO DESPAIR (1 Corinthians 11:1 "Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.")

*PERSEVERE (Hebrews 6:11-12 "And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.")

Define paradigm:
A paradigm is a way of thinking or processing information based on foregone conclusions, which influence us so much it affects the overall way we view our life; a theory or a group of ideas about how something should be done, made, or thought about.
Desired outcome for Christian coaching:
The desired goals of Christian coaching is excellence as the Bible instructs.
Desired outcome for secular or new-age coaching:
The desired goals in secular and new-age coaching is success.

Scriptural basis for excellence:

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
By-products of excellence:
As we reach new levels of excellence, the by-product will be success.
Sanders’ Essential Qualities of Leadership:
*Discipline

*Vision

*Wisdom

*Decision

*Courage

*Humility

*Integrity

*Sincerity

Explain why “discipline” is first on the list:
Without discipline, all the other gifts can't grow. Before we can conquer the world we have to conquer ourselves.
In what regard are Christian coaches also leaders?
Because we help others make a change in their lives in accordance to God's plan, we're held accountable for how we lead them. This is what leaders do.
Why are motives important to God?
Because it's the difference of doing for ourselves rather than doing for God’s will.
Explain the difference between excellence and success:
The difference between excellence and success is that success is accomplishing a goal whether morally right or wrong. Excellence is seeking His kingdom first and doing according to God's will.
What differentiates young Christians from mature Christians?
Mature Christians fully accept the Word as being true and live their lives in accordance to the Word dying to self. Young Christians still have tendencies to live in the flesh instead of dying to self and fully accepting the Word as truth.
What is the first commandment, and why is it especially important for Christian coaches?
"You shall have no other gods before or besides Me." Exodus 20:3 AMPC

This verse is especially important for Christian coaches because it tells us that He is THE one and only living God and we’re to seek only Him in our tasks as Christian coaches. Anything else would be considered other “gods”.

What does it mean to “speak the truth in love” to your clients?
"Speak the truth in love" means that while we are to be honest and truthful with our clients, we must not do it maliciously to hurt them or be flippant, nonchalant, harsh (although sometimes the truth does seem harsh). It's also important to let them know that we love them.
Why is it important for Christians to be discerning about the training they receive?
You can't help others if we ourselves do not know the truth. This is why we must be careful that our training is deeply in the Word and led according to the instructions the Word shows us.
Explain the substance of the Colossians 2:8 scripture in your words:
We must be careful that we're not led away by deceitful teachings or any other teachings that do not check out against the Word lest we be led astray from Him.
What sets authentic, Christian life coach training apart from other types of training?
Secular coaching urges the coaching client to seek their own desires and goals and authentic, Christian coaching (Christ-centered, Bible-based, Spirit-led) inspires the clients to seek the Lord’s will in their lives and align their lives with God’s plan.
What does secular humanist training teach?
These courses and schools generally separate one’s faith from the profession of coaching. They encourage the coach to set aside their own beliefs during their work so as not to interfere with what the clients are trying to achieve. The sessions revolve around the clients’ goals as derived from their own thoughts, feelings, and values.
What is a Christian track of training?
Courses that have Bible verses added into the program to make the casual and not-so-well-educated believer comfortable. These programs may be offered by a secular school or organization so they can claim to offer a “Christian” course or track of study. These programs are roughly based on secular course features instead of new-age philosophies. They offer scriptural support for their secular methods. Some programs take scripture out of context to support an unscriptural concept or philosophy.
Define “apostate”:
Training that includes neuro linguistic programming (NLP), aura reading, hypnosis, and/or other radically new age concepts or human manipulation, all of which are completely incompatible with the Word of God.
What are compromised programs?
Courses that started out Christian or biblical, whose writers or school heads opted for secular or new-age accreditation, thereby coming under the authority of ungodly advisors, consequently compromising course content little by little.
What is wrong with the idea that there can be more than one truth?
This idea is dangerous because not only confusing but it goes against the Word which is the one and only Truth.
Why shouldn’t Christians integrate (or combine) various philosophies in order to harvest the “best” of each?
Again, this is confusing to others who want to know more about our faith plus we’re not following what Scriptures said.
Explain I Timothy 4:7 in your own words:
Do not listen to other philosophies, myths, new-age, and anything else outside the range of the Word and verbally reject such things. Keep yourself in the Word as to strengthen yourself in the Word.
What reason did Jesus give for coming to earth?
"The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows)." John 10:10 AMP
What is the truth?
"For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life. For God did not send the Son into the world in order to judge (to reject, to condemn, to pass sentence on) the world, but that the world might find salvation and be made safe and sound through Him. He who believes in Him [who clings to, trusts in, relies on Him] is not judged [he who trusts in Him never comes up for judgment; for him there is no rejection, no condemnation–he incurs no damnation]; but he who does not believe (cleave to, rely on, trust in Him) is judged already [he has already been convicted and has already received his sentence] because he has not believed in and trusted in the name of the only begotten Son of God. [He is condemned for refusing to let his trust rest in Christ's name.]" John 3:16-18 AMPC

What five criteria unique to Counseling does the book list?

Write the operational definition of life coaching?
Life coaching involves a collaborative, one-to-one, confidential, ongoing, usually deliberately formed relationship in which the client is guided by the coach to make better decisions, look at alternatives to current choices, identify tolerations, barriers, challenges, reach beyond their feelings of limitations, and focus better to achieve their goals.
Describe how secular coaching works:
Secular coaching urges the coaching client to seek their own desires and goals. It encourages the client to look within themselves for what they really want. The secular coach then works with the client to achieve the client’s stated goals and remove obstacles (human, material, and environmental) that get in the way of achieving success. The coach’s own values, morals, and feelings may have little or no bearing on the results they help their client attain. The coach remains open and non-judgmental. The sessions are ALL about the client and client’s wants, needs, hopes, dreams, desires, and how to achieve them.
Describe how Christian coaching works:
Christian coaching inspires the clients to seek the Lord’s will in their lives and align their lives with God’s plan. This requires the Christian coach to be familiar with biblical principles and especially New Testament teachings of Christ. The Christian coach uses coaching knowledge, proficiencies, and tools to assist the clients in finding their talents and gifts to benefit a greater purpose and uses prayer in addition to traditional coaching tools to assist in removal of obstacles presented by the enemy (Satan). In every way, including their own lives, the Christian life coaches should demonstrate and urge compliance with Godly lifestyles.
Prayer moves the hands of God. Explain how prayer can be useful to a Christian life coach:
Not only does prayer helps guide the Christian life coach in performing the tasks he or she has been given regarding the client but to also help guide the client to making decisions according to the purposes He has set for his or her life.
Signs a person may have been called to coaching:

How do you need to broaden your vision of the ways in which you will use coaching?
Since I’m using coaching in my women’s counseling and coaching ministry, I need to learn all that I can in order to help the women who come to me for help.
What is the first, most important thing a Christian coach needs to do?
The first thing is to have a close personal relationship with Jesus and then become deeply embedded in the Word.
