Used to determine a host's MAC address from its IP address. Also used to view and make changes to IP address-to-MAC address translation tables.
Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)
A feature of the Windows OS that enables DHCP clients to self-configure an IP address and subnet mask automatically when a DHCP Server is not available.
Automatic Private IP Addressing
A device that connects two networks and passes traffic between them based only on the node address, so that traffic between nodes on one network does not appear on the other network. For example, in Ethernet networks it looks at the Ethernet address and filters and forwards packets based on the MAC addresses. Operates at Level 2 of the OSI model.
Bridge
A special network address that refers to all users on the network. In a TCP/IP network it would be 255.255.255.255. Any packet sent to this address will be sent to everyone on that LAN.
Broadcast Address
The collection of all devices that will receive each other's broadcast frames. A router will not cross a broadcast frame.
Broadcast Domain
The group of devices whose frames could potentially collide with one another.
Collision Domain
A protocol and system for mapping IP addresses to user-friendly names. It resolves host names to IP addresses, and vice versa (with reverse lookups).
Domain Name Service (DNS)
A dependable flexible alternative to manual TCP/IP configuration that provides PCs with automatic configuration of the three necessary TCP/IP parameters - IP Addresses, subnet mask and default gateway.
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
A protocol designed primarily for transferring data across a network. FTP denotes both a protocol and a utility used for the purpose. It was created to quickly and efficiently transfer data files from one host to another without impacting the remote hosts resources.
File Transfer Protocol
A defined series of binary data that is the basic container for a discrete amount of data moving across a network. Also called a packet.
Frame
The protocol used for communication between a web server and a web browser.
HTTP
The secure version of the protocol used for communication between a web server and a web browser.
HTTPS
An alternative to POP3, it retrieves e-mail from an e-mail server like POP3. Uses TCP/IP port 143.
IMAP
Enables systems on a TCP/IP network to share status and error information. Two of the most common used of ICMP messages are ping and tracert.
Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)
Protocol suite developed by Novell, primarily for supporting Novell NetWare-based networks.
IPX/SPX: IPX/SPX (Internetwork Packet Exchange/Sequence Packet Exchange)
Designed to overcome the problem encountered with SMTP, in which workstations were not confined to permanent terminal-based connections to a mainframe. A POP3 mail server hoods the mail in a mail-drop until the workstation is ready to receive the mail.
POP3
Any IP address that can be used on a LAN that is restricted to that LAN and can not be routed to the Internet.
Private IP Address
A type of server that makes a single Internet connection and services requests on behalf of many users.
Proxy Server
A Physical layer device that amplifies the signals it receives on one port and resends it on another port. Used to extend the distance of a network segment.
Repeater
A device connecting separate networks that forwards a packet from one network to another based on the network address for protocol being used. These devices operate at Layer 3 (Network) of the OSI model.
Router
Used when you need to transfer files over an encrypted connection. It used an SSH session, which provides the encryption.
Secure File Transfer Protocol
Protocol used to send and receive mail over the internet.
SMTP
An Internet standard for monitoring and configuring network devices. A network using this protocol is composed of management systems and agents.
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)
A device that filters and forwards traffic based on some criteria. A bridge and a router are both examples of switches.
Switch
A set of communication protocols developed by the U.S. Department of Defense that enables dissimilar computers to share information over a network.
TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol)
