A 32/64- bit expansion slot designed by Intel specifically for video that runs at 66 MHz and yields a throughput of at least 254 MBps. Later versions (2X, 4X, 8X) give you substantially higher throughput.
Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP)
A silver or pink bag that is designed to protect sensitive components by ensuring that any static charge collects on the outside of the bag rather than the components inside.
Anti-static Bag
A specially designed device to bleed electrical charges away safely. It uses a 1-megohmresitor to bleed the charge away slowly and protect computer hardware.
Anti-static Strap
Classically, the software routines burned onto the System ROM of PC. More commonly seen as any software that directly controls a particular piece of hardware. A set of programs encoded in Read-Only Memory (ROM) on computers. There programs handle startup operations and low-level control of hardware such as disk drives, the keyboard, and monitor.
BIOS (Basic Input/Output Services)
Electronic chips that handle all of the low-level functions of a PC, which in the original PC were handled by close to 30 different chips. They usually consist of one, two, or three separate chips embedded into a motherboard to handle all of these functions.
Chipset
The class of fire suppression designed for electrical fires.
Class C Extinguisher
The "brain" of the computer. The microprocessor that handles the primary calculations for the computer.
CPU (Central Processing Unit)
The tube of a monitor in which rays of electrons are beamed onto a phosphorescent screen to produce images. Also a shorthand way to describe a monitor that uses CRT rather than LCD technology.
CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)
A 184-pin high-speed RAM that handles two signals per clock cycle. Can be installed singling or in pairs.
Double Data-Rate SDRAM
The movement of electrons from one body to another. ESD is a real menace to PCs as it can cause permanent damage to semiconductors.
ESD (Electrostatic Discharge)
Software that has been written onto read-only (ROM). It is a combination of software and hardware. ROMs, PROMs, and EPROMs that have data or programs recorded on them are considered this.
Firmware
A tool with a very large needle, a gauge that indicates volts, and a wire with an alligator clip used to discharge electricity from electronic devices.
High-voltage Probe
The type of expansion bus found in the original IBM PC for the slots on the motherboard that allowed additional hardware to be connected to the computer's motherboard. An 8-bit, 8.33 MHz expansion bus was designed by IBM for its AT computer and released to the public domain. An improved 16-bit bus was also released to the public domain.
ISA (Industry Standard Architecture)
The most common type of battery used in a laptop. They are not considered hazardous waste so there are no regulations on recycling them, however should still be recycled.
Lithium-Ion Battery
A document that contains safety information about a given product. Information provided includes safe handling procedures, what to do in case of an accident, and disposal information.
Material Safety Data Sheet
The primary circuit board that holds all of the core components of the computer.
Motherboard
An electronic measuring instrument that combines several functions in one unit. The most basic instruments include an ammeter, voltmeter, and ohmmeter. Analog multimeters are sometimes referred to as "volt-ohm-meters", abbreviated VOM.
MultiMeter
The Federal agency in charge of ensuring that employers have a safe work environment.
OSHA
Design architecture for the sockets on the computer motherboard that enable system components to be added to the computer. It is a 'local buss" standard, meaning that devices added to a computer through this port will use the processor at the motherboard's full speed (up to 33 MHz), rather than at the slower 8 MHz speed of the regular bus. In addition to moving data at a faster rate, it moves data 32 or 64 bits at a time, rather than the 8 or 16 bits that the older ISA buses supported.
Peripheral Component Interconnect
Current generation of expansion cards, this has serial bus with a rather bi- directional throughput of 250 MB/s per lane, with up to 3 lanes. Meant to replace the PCI.
PCI-e
Also called PnP, a combination of smart PCs, smart devices, and smart operating systems that automatically configure all the necessary system resources and port when you install a new peripheral device.
Plug and Play
The measurement of the amount of electricity flowing down a wire.
Amperes
A patented RAM technology that uses accelerated clocks to provide very high-speed memory. Requires the use of a Continuity RIMM to fill unused memory slots.
Rambus DRAM
A six-sided, star-shaped "screwdriver" used by some manufacturers. A Phillips will not work in this type of screw.
Torx Driver
The measurement of the "pressure" a current places on a wire.
Volts
