Anti-Malaria Drug Categories (2)
1. Chloroquine Resistant (cheapest, most effective)

Atovaquone/Proguanil (Malarone)
Chloroquine/Mefloquine Resistant areas.

Start: 1-2 days before, take same time EVERYDAY, continue for 7 days after leaving.

AE: GI
Chloroquine Phosphate (Aralen)
Chloroquine Sensitive

Start: 1-2 weeks before, same time WEEKLY, continue for 4 weeks after.
Doxycycline
Chloroquine/Mefloquine Resistant areas.

Contraindicated: Kids (under 8), Pregnant Women.

Photosensitivity and GI side effects.
Hydroxycholorquine (Plaquenil)
Chloroquine Sensitive areas.

AE: Blurred Vision, Retinopathy, Psoriasis (same as chlorquine)
Mefloquine (Lariam)
Chloroquine Resistant areas.

Most Common.

AE: Psychosis, depression, Arrhythmias.
Primaquine
Used in special circumstances for dormant liver bugs.

Contraindicated in G6PD1 Deficiencies.
Metronidazole (Flagyl)
Antiprotozoal & Antibacterial.

Broad.

AE: Disulfiram like reaction with alcohol.
Iodoquinol (Yodoxin)
Misc. Med.

Used with Metronidazole for amebic infections.
Pentamidine
Misc Med for protozoans but very toxic.

HIV patients with low CD4 counts get an opportunistic infection called Pneumocystic jiroveci (PJ).
Quinine
1st line therapy for Malaria.

Most common (Quinidine also used for treatment).

AE: Tinnitus, Visual Disturbances (cinchonism) QT prolongation, BLACKWATER FEVER.

Used for Phthirus (Crab Lice) tx.

Most common tx.
Malathion 0.5%
Used for Phthirus (Crab Lice) tx. (Less commonly used).
Permethrin 5% (Elimite) Cream
Used for scabies.

Ivermectin also used.
Albendazole (Albenza)
Broad worm treatment.
Ivermectin (Mectizan)
Helminthic infection drug.

Involved in Mazotti reaction due to killing of microfilarie.
Mebendazole (Vermox)
Broad Antihelmintic.
