What is gamma knife used for?

glomus tumors, VS, and meningiomas. cyber knife is essentially the same thing

rates of facial weakness in Gamma knife? hearing?
|
1-1.5%, usually mild and brief. hemifacial spasms 1-2 years out, usually improve overtime. 50% have hearing decline over time.

how does gamma knife work?
|
1 treatment, metal pins holding a frame on the head, uses the frame for image guidance (usually MRI, s/t CT scan), certain openings within the helmet allow radiation in at strategic places....kinda like IMRT. 50% isodose goal is 15 Cgy.

what happens to the tumor with gamma knife
|
does not shrink immediately, can even grow a little bit in the first year due to edema from XRT.

indications for gamma knife
|
< 3 cm, growing, elderly, recurrent tumor, patient choice. (don't radiate larger turmors due to edema issues causing hydrocephalus or brainstem compression and may not work well on large tumors).

70-99% (we quote 80-85%).
