Interphase |
Made up of subphases: G1, S, G2 Gap 1: cell growth and normal functions - DNA synthesis (S): copies DNA Gap 2: additional growth - Mitosis (M): indudes division of the nucleus (mitosis) and division of the cell cytoplasm (cytokinesis) large enough and the DNA undamaged. |
Mitosis |
The purpose of _________ is cell division: making two cells out of one. The DNA is replicated in Interphase (during the S phase) At the end of DNA replication, the cell contains 2 identical sets of DNA. In _________, the chromosomes have to break apart so that each new cell only has one set of Chromosome. _________ is divided into four phases prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telaphase. |
Prophase |
_________ is characterized by four events: Chromatin condenses to become chromosomes. The nuclear membrane (envelope) disappears centrades have separated and moved to opposite sides of the cell. Spindle fibers from a bridge between the end of the cell. |
Metaphase |
Chromosome line up across the center of the cell. Each chromosome attaches to a spindle fiber at its centromere. |
Anaphase |
Centromeres that join the sister chromatids split. Sister Chromatids separate becoming individual chromosomes. Separated chromatids move opposite sides of the cell. |
Telophase |
Chromosomes (each consisting of a single chromatid begin to loose their rod like appearance. They are becoming chromatin again. A new nuclear envelope forms (nucleus) around the chromosomes at each side of the cell. Spindle fibers break down and dissolve. |
Cytokinesis |
____________ is the division of the cytoplasm into two individual cells. The process of the ___________ differs somewhat in plant and animals cells. In animal cells the cell membrane pinches the cell into two nearly daughter cell. In plant cells a structure known as a cell plate forms midway between the 2 nucleus which gradually develops into a separating membrane. |
