How did the Civil war effect the hemp industry?

The civil war practically ended the hemp industry ( though it wasn't the sword in the chest). The production went from 40,000 tons(1860) to 10,000 tons(late 1890- early 1900) even with hemp seeds being imported. By the early 1900s, due to lack of labor and lack of developed machinery, the hemp industry came to a near hault.
