Mixture
Compounds of 2 or more substances that are mixed together, but can be easily separated from each other
Exp: a salad, trail mix
Solution
A solution is made up or substances that mix so thoroughly that they cannot be distinguished as separate substances. They can be easily separated into the original substances.
Exp. Salt water
Filtration
A method of separating solid particles from a liquid by pouring the mixture through a filter paper in a funnel
Sifting
A method used to separate smaller solid particles from larger solid particles. Screens could be used for this process.
Magnetism
Magnetic attraction is used to separate magnetic material from a mixture of other substances.
Evaporation
Used to separate a solid that has been dissolved in a liquid. The solution is heated until all of the liquid turns to gas and evaporates and leaves the solid.
Flotation
Process used to separate solids, which float in liquids. The solids are skimmed off of the liquid surface
Solubility
The ability of a given substance to dissolve
Solvent
A liquid that dissolves a solid, liquid, or gas, resulting in a solution. The most common solvent in everyday life is water
Solute
A substance dissolved in another substance
