How to remember?

Purple Mice Are Tasty

What happens at the Prophase stage?

-Chromosomes condense, getting shorter and fatter.

-Tiny bundles of centrioles start to move to opposite ends of the cell (forms spindle fibres)

-Nuclear envelope starts to break down

What happens at the Metaphase stage?

-Chromosomes line up along the spindle equator

-Become attached to the spindle by their centromere

-At metaphase checkpoint, cell checks that all the chromosomes are attached to the spindle.

What happens at the Anaphase stage?

-Centromeres divide, separating the pair of sister chromatids

-Spindles shorten

-Chromatids are pulled to opposite ends of the cell (centromere first)

What happens at the Telophase stage?

-Chromatids uncoil and become long and thin again

-Called chromosomes again

-Nuclear envelope forms around each group of chromosomes

-Now two nuclei

What is Cytokineses?

-Cytoplasm divides

-Animal cells, a Cleavage Furrow forms to divide the membrane (protein is actin)

-Now two daughter cells (genetically identical to each other and original)

What is the significance of Mitosis?

-Growth of the organism

-Repair of tissue

-Replacement of old cells

-Asexual reproduction
